We use 10% public-use micro-data samples from the census of five Latin American<br \/>\ncountries with relatively high fertility rates. We employ a twin instrumental variable approach to<br \/>\nestimate the causal effect of family size on educational attainment of children born prior to the<br \/>\ntwin birth. We shed light on the potential mechanisms affecting the relationship between family<br \/>\nsize and children\u2019s human capital outcomes when: i) financial restrictions are binding, ii) returns<br \/>\nto education are low, iii) parental investments decisions are affected by gender norms; iv) formal<br \/>\neducation supply is scarce.
